BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA (September 29, 2018) A man identified as Blaine Hodge was stabbed along with a woman at a Starbucks by Stockdale Highway and California Avenue.
Bakersfield police received a call about an assault with a deadly weapon at an apartment complex.
However, officers later determined that there was a stabbing at Starbucks on Stockdale Highway and California Avenue. When police arrived they came across a man and a woman that were suffering from stab wounds.
The suspect was able to get away by the time police arrived at the scene. Officers think that the suspect and the woman were dating. A male bystander identified as Blaine Hodge tried to step in to help the woman, but he ended up being stabbed as well.
An investigation into the stabbing that injured Blaine Hodge and the woman remains ongoing at this time.
Assaults at Starbucks
As with every other business, there have been assaults and attacks at Starbucks. An NYPD officer in Manhattan was attacked last year by a homeless person police are saying was emotionally disturbed. The victim is blaming the assault on Starbucks policy of feeding homeless people who are mentally disturbed. The officer sustained a torn shoulder in the accident and now has to undergo physical therapy multiple times per week. He says that he warned Starbucks that it’s policy on feeding the homeless was dangerous for over a year. Assaults can often be difficult to predict, but when a business has warning about a dangerous situation they should take measures to correct it. When a business fails to take adequate measures to protect customers from assaults they may face civil liability for any attacks that occur.
Liability In Assaults At A Business
Business owners are held to a high standard when it comes to keeping a safe environment for the guests that come to visit. Staff at the business should take reasonable measures to prevent violence. Moreover, if a conflict is brewing staff should also take measures to deescalate the situation before someone is injured. Depending on the particular facts of the case a victim of violence may have the ability to recover damages for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A Los Angeles premises liability attorney can examine the facts of your case and take steps to help preserve your rights.
