What To Do After Hitting An Animal

Animals are involved in thousands of car accidents every year. Drivers and their passengers are often seriously injured and a number of people end up dying. It can be difficult to know where to begin after you’ve hit an animal in the middle of the road. Here are just a few steps that you should take after a car accident with an animal:

  • Call the police and make sure that an accident report is taken.

  • Take pictures of the accident and of any injuries that you may have received.

  • Seek medical attention for your injuries. Get any notes that are taken from your trip to the doctor.

  • Contact your insurance company. You may be able to file a claim if you have comprehensive coverage.

  • Seek the legal counsel of an experienced car accident attorney.

Victims of car accident involving loose animals may be entitled to compensation for their injuries including medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.

Liability In Car Accidents Involving Farm Animals

Property owners have a responsibility to make sure that their animals are secured on their grounds. Horses should typically be kept in a fenced off perimeter which is then surrounded by another fence around the border of the property. This will give animal owners two layers of protection if the horse gets free. There are a few counties in rural parts of California that are open range counties. This means that animals are allowed to wander where they please. But in most areas farm animals like cows or horses should be confined. An experienced car accident attorney can evaluate the facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.
