Humberto Ayala Accident: Salinas Valley Prison System (SVSP) Officer Died In Car Accident After Truck Driver Made Dangerous Left Turn On Highway 101 By Chualar

SALINAS, CALIFORNIA (October 22, 2018) A 36-year-old Salinas Valley Prison System (SVSP) Corrections Officer identified as Humberto Ayala has tragically died in a car accident after the driver of a big rig truck made a dangerous left turn on Highway 101.

Humberto Ayala worked for SVSP since 2005 and was known as a real stand up person. The accident took place when a 63-year-old truck driver identified as George Cabrera made a left turn onto Highway 101 and may not have seen the victim as he was approaching in his 2005 Nissan Altima.

Ayala‘s car hit a trailer that was attached to the 18-wheeler and was dragged for some distance. Emergency medical responders rushed to the scene and the victim had to be cut out of his vehicle.

Tragically, he later died due to his injuries. Public Information Officer Lt. Eduardo Mazariegos has expressed his frustration following the truck accident.

According to Mazariegos, the city has not done enough to keep the roads safe as the population has increased in Salinas and Chualar.  Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have played a role in the Humberto Ayala accident.

“Our dear friend Humberto Ayala lived a life full of humbleness, hard work, caring for others, and singing to make all of those around him smile . Unfortunately, his life was cut too short due to a tragic car accident, a horrifying picture that will never leave our minds. But more than that painful image, Ayala left so many unforgettable memories in our hearts. None of us ever imagined saying goodbye to him would come this soon, and the gap that now lives within his family’s heart will never be filled. Today we ask for your help and support in realising some of the stress that comes with such a sudden loss of a loved one. Our goal is to give his family some condolence by not having a financial burden to worry about during such a hard time, but above all, his son. Evan was his world, and making sure he is taken care of will make sure Humberto will forever smile down on us!Any and all help will be greatly appreciated and valued by ALL of his loved ones!”

As of Monday morning on October 22, 2018, $13,370 has been raised to help the family of the victim. The tragic death of the corrections officer raises a number of concerns about the safety of the roads in Salinas and on Highway 101.

Municipal Liability and Driver Liability For The Death of Humberto Ayala

Dangerous left-turns are one of the leading causes of accidents and injuries in the United States. When a driver is making an unprotected left turn, it is always their responsibility to check the roads and make sure that no vehicle is close enough to pose a hazard. Drivers are supposed to yield the right of way to all drivers that are close enough to cause an accident. Left turn collisions are not always solely the fault of a driver.

If there is a history of accidents at a particular intersection or road, the city should take corrective measures in order to fix the situation. The easiest solution is to simply install a traffic light with a protected left turn. According to California Government Code 830.8, “A public entity may be liable for accidents approximately caused by its failure to provide a signal, sign, marking or device to warn of a dangerous condition which endangers the safe movement of traffic and which would not be reasonably apparent to, and would not have been anticipated by, a person exercising due care.” A truck accident attorney that understands municipal negligence can evaluate the specific facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.
