Los Angeles Chief of Staff of the Department on Disability Nicole Willett died After She Was Run Over By A Power Boat In Marina Del Rey As She Was Kayaking

MARINA DEL REY, CALIFORNIA (September 29, 2018) A 47-year-old woman identified as Nicole Willett was killed in a boating accident after her kayak was run over.

Nicole Willett has served as the Los Angeles Chief of Staff of the Department on Disability since 2014. Two people were aboard the 50 foot power boat at the time of the accident.

The boat operator didn’t appear to realize what happened until they were alerted by a fishing boat. Marina Del Rey police did not cite the driver of the boat. Both people on board spoke to investigators for several hours.

An investigation into the fatal kayaking accident that killed Nicole Willett remains ongoing at this time.

Staying Safe While Kayaking

Kayaking can be an extremely enjoyable and peaceful recreational activity. But there is always the possibility of injury or death. Here are just a few safety tips you should follow to say safe while kayaking:

  • Safety Vests: It has been estimated that 80% of people who die in boating accidents do so by drowning. A life-jacket can significantly improve your odds of survival in an accident.

  • Boating Rules: There are “rules of the road” for boats in much the same way there are for cars. Learning these rules and following them will help keep you safe.

  • Instruction: It’s a good idea to learn proper paddling techniques. Among other things this can help you prevent your kayak from tipping over.

Boating accidents can leave victims with serious injuries and often result in death. A Los angeles personal injury attorney can take steps to help preserve your rights after an accident.

Liability In Boating Accidents

Boat operators are expected to drive reasonably safe and obey the boating rules of the road. Unfortunately, boat drivers become distracted or intoxicated and this can impact their ability to drive safely. There are obviously no road lanes on a lake or in the ocean, but there rules that govern how boats should maneuver in the water. Power boats, for example, are more likely to be found liable in accidents than other vehicles. Victims of boat accidents or their family may have the ability to file a personal injury claim in order to be compensated for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A personal injury attorney can examine the facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.
