Spechelle Pope Palmdale: Spechelle Pope, Lesther Deleon Killed In Palmdale Lyft Car Accident Along Rancho Vista Boulevard
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (June 10, 2021) – A mother of four identified as Spechelle Pope and a Lyft driver identified as Lesther Deleon have tragically died in a hit-and-run car accident along Rancho Vista Boulevard.
Los Angeles County police officials are saying that the collision took place shortly after midnight on Wednesday. Lesther Deleon was driving his Lyft passenger Spechelle Pope when the Toyota Corolla they were in was rear-ended by a Dodge Challenger.
The force of the impact caused the Toyota Corolla to flip into a light pole before it caught on fire. A worker from Denny’s rushed to the scene of the collision and was able to pull Lesther Deleon from the burning vehicle.
Sadly, Lesther Deleon died before the ambulance was able to arrive. Spechelle Pope suffered the same fate and was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
Police believed that the driver who fled the scene abandoned the Dodge Charger before driving off in an Infiniti. Street racing may have been involved in the crash.
A full investigation into the fatal Lyft car accident remains ongoing at this time.
Liability In Palmdale Lyft / Uber Car Accidents
Uber and Lyft offer convenient and affordable transportation. But their expansion throughout the United States has also come with a sharp rise in traffic fatalities. According to MIT Technology Review, “The rise of ride-sharing services has increased traffic deaths by 2% to 3% in the US since 2011, equivalent to as many as 1,100 mortalities a year, according to a new study from the University of Chicago and Rice University.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to Lyft / Uber accidents including:
- Drunk driving
- Driver fatigue
- Inclement weather
Far from being rare occurrences, nearly 315 people are killed every year in car accidents involving drivers that were street racing. Most street racing crashes occur in the late evening and are more likely to occur in urban areas. Street races were also more likely to involve teenagers. There are a number of steps that can be taken in order to reduce the amount of street racing that takes place.
- Police officers should be deployed to areas known to have street racing.
- Spectators and participants should be arrested, charged and fined.
- Speed bumps should be installed in problematic areas.
If a driver is speeding and causes an accident they can be held at fault through a civil claim. In order to win a civil claim plaintiffs will have to demonstrate negligence. Lyft and Uber passengers are protected even if their drivers are not held at fault. According to Erin Simpson, “Lyft’s $1 million liability policy, which includes uninsured/underinsured liability coverage, is designed to provide coverage for Lyft drivers to protect passengers and third parties in unfortunate and tragic accidents.” It is extremely important that evidence is properly preserved after an accident:
- Eye witnesses should be interviewed
- Surveillance footage should be examined
- Lyft / Uber driver data should be subpoenaed
- Medical records should be preserved
The family of any victim that died in an accident involving a Lyft of Uber may be able to seek justice through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Potential beneficiaries in a civil claim may include a victim’s spouse, children and parents. A Los Angeles Lyft accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal options are.
