Liability In Alhambra Car Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. According to the NCBI, “Road traffic accidents (RTAs) have emerged as an important public health issue which needs to be tackled by a multi-disciplinary approach. […] The number of fatal and disabling road accident[s] happening is increasing day by day and is a real public health challenge for all the concerned agencies to prevent it.” Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Lacerations
  • Organ damage
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Head trauma
  • PTSD

Head injuries tend to be the most serious and long lasting. According to Chandi Edmonds, assistant professor at Feinberg, “The lifetime costs of a patient’s treatment for a traumatic brain injury are estimated to run from $85,000 to $3 million.” Many head injuries may not even be immediately detectable after an accident. This is why it’s so important for accident victims to continue to seek treatment and follow up care following a collision.

Many accidents are caused by drivers that make unsafe lane changes. According to California Vehicle Code 21658, “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.” If a driver is negligent and causes an accident they can typically be held at fault through a civil claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering.

If the victim of a car accident was also working at the time of the collision they may also be able to get support through the worker’s compensation system.  According to the California Department of Industrial Relations Workers Compensation Guidebook, “If you get hurt on the job, your employer is required by law to pay for workers’ compensation benefits.” A car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
