Dujuan Armstrong Santa Rita Jail: Dujuan Armstrong Died In Police Custody At Santa Rita Jail In Dublin –> Criminal Investigation Into Officers Conduct Remains Ongoing

DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA (August 7, 2019) – A 23-year-old father of two identified as Dujuan Armstrong has tragically died in police custody at the Santa Rita jail in Dublin after being chained to his cell door.

An Alameda County Sheriff’s lieutenant has been placed on administrative leave and a criminal investigation is currently underway following the death of Dujuan Armstrong. Authorities are reporting that the victim may have been having a mental health crisis.

The Lieutenant that chained the victim to the door was warned against doing so and told that it violated the sheriff’s restraint policy. When jail staff came to check on Dujuan Armstrong he was found unconscious and transported to a local hospital.

He died two weeks later after being taken off life-support. A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For In Custody Deaths

Police officials have a legal responsibility to take care of suspects and provide them with reasonably adequate healthcare. If a prison official is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate they may be found liable. For example, if an inmate is exhibiting suicidal ideations they should not be given material that they could use to commit suicide such as rope or chains.

The family of any victim that died in police custody may have legal recourse through California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. Damages in a civil claim can help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your options are. There are, however, statute of limitations associated with filing a claim, so it’s important to act quickly.
