Electrician Injured In RePlanet Packaging Electrical Box Explosion Accident On Goshen Avenue In Visalia

VISALIA, CALIFORNIA (July 31, 2020) – An electrician was seriously injured in an electrical explosion accident at the RePlanet Packaging facility on Goshen Avenue.

California Highway Patrol are saying that the accident took place around 3:47 p.m. on Thursday. For reasons that remain under investigation an electrical box exploded thereby causing an electrician to suffer serious burn injuries.

The arc flash set the electrical box on fire and sent smoke throughout the RePlanet Packaging. The Visalia Fire Department was not able to gain access to the electrical box and the victim until Southern California Edison shut down power at the RePlanet Packaging plant.

Paramedics took the victim to the burn unit of a nearby hospital. An investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.

Electrical accidents are one of the four leading causes of workplace injury and death in the United States. According to OSHA, “Out of 4,779 worker fatalities in private industry in calendar year 2018, 1,008 or 21.1% were in construction — that is, one in five worker deaths last year were in construction. The leading causes of private sector worker deaths (excluding highway collisions) in the construction industry were falls, followed by struck by object, electrocution, and caught-in/between.” There are a number of common causes of electrical explosions including:

  • Faulty electrical wires
  • Leaking gas
  • Flammable materials left near exposed wires
  • Loose connectors

When a worker is injured in an accident they will typically have legal recourse through a worker’s compensation claim. According to the California Department of Industrial Relations Workers Compensation Guidebook, “Workers’ compensation covers some, but not all, stress-related (psychological) injuries caused by your job. Also, workers’ compensation may not cover an injury that is reported to the employer after the worker is told he or she will be terminated or laid off. For information about what is covered, use the resources in Chapter 10.” Injured workers may also have legal recourse through a third party liability claim.

A third party liability claim may be possible if a business failed to maintain their property in a reasonably safe manner. According to California Vehicle Code 1714, “Everyone is responsible, not only for the result of his or her willful acts, but also for an injury occasioned to another by his or her want of ordinary care or skill in the management of his or her property or person, except so far as the latter has, willfully or by want of ordinary care, brought the injury upon himself or herself.” Electrical accidents can often be prevented when the proper safety protocols are in place.

An electricity provider like Southern California Edison could be liable for an accident if they failed to shut off power to a specific area. Power companies will often be given notice that work will be done at a particular spot. They will be asked to shut off power temporarily at that spot but this doesn’t always happen. Victims of electrical accidents often suffer from very serious injuries including:

  • Burn injuries
  • Amputations
  • Lacerations
  • Organ damage
  • Neurological impairment

Any person that is injured in an electrical explosion may have recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. It is important that accident victims continue to seek medical treatment. A premises liability attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
