SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (October 20, 2018) An 18-year-old Cal Poly student identified as Jordan Benjamin Grant has tragically died after he was involved in a car accident on Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo County.

California Highway Patrol are saying that the fatal motorcycle accident took place around 4:50 p.m. when the driver of a BMW was making an unsafe left turn. The BMW pulled directly in front of Jordan Benjamin Grant who was riding a 2015 Yamaha motorcycle.

The victim’s motorcycle slid into the left side of the BMW and the rider was ejected. Emergency medical workers rushed to the scene of the accident in order to treat the victim for his injuries. But he was later pronounced dead.

Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong announced the death of  Jordan Grant in an email to students. “We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with Jordan’s family and friends during this very difficult time,” said Armstrong.

The California Highway Patrol  is urging anyone that may have seen the motorcycle accident to come forward and call 805-594-8700. Counseling services have also been made available to students by calling 805-756-2511.

Motorcycle Accident Fatalities and Injuries

Motorcyclists are much more likely than passengers in a car to die or become seriously injured after a crash. Alcohol and speeding are major contributing factors to crashes. In an effort to curb the severity of motorcycle accidents a number of states have adopted mandatory helmet use laws. But this still applies to less than half of the states. Even when a motorcyclist is driving perfectly safe, riders can still be in grave danger. Most accidents occur when car or truck drivers don’t see motorcyclists and rear-end them or make dangerous left turns. A motorcycle accident attorney can evaluate the specific facts for your case and let you know what your rights are.

Liability In Motorcycle Crashes Involving Left Turns

Drivers have a common law duty to operate their vehicles in a reasonably safe manner and take steps to avoid accidents. This is especially true when drivers are trying to make left turns. According to the California Vehicle Code, drivers attempting to turn left must yield the right-of-way to all approaching vehicles that are close enough to pose a hazard. Unless a driver had a green light, they will typically be held liable for an accident while they were making a left turn. A victim of a motorcycle accident or their family may have the ability to file a claim for damages including lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering.
