Liability In Inmate Suicides At The Santa Barbara County Main Jail
Sadly, suicide is one of the leading causes of death at jails according to a new report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The suicide rate in jails remains far higher than in state prisons or the American population more generally. People in jail often have very serious physical and mental health needs. But far too often inmates are not given the love, support and care that they deserve. There are actually a number of steps that jails can take in order to prevent suicides.
- Jail staff should be properly trained in suicide prevention
- Inmate should be given mental health screenings
- Inmates with known suicidal ideations should be kept away from tools that could be used to commit suicide – like bed sheets
- Jail staff should periodically check on inmates to make sure they are safe
- Jail officials should promptly administer help to inmates after any suspected suicide attempt
Jails have a constitutional obligation to provide inmates with reasonably adequate healthcare. This includes taking steps to prevent inmate suicide. The family of any inmate that died in a county jail may be able to seek justice through a wrongful death claim. Potential beneficiaries in a civil claim may include the victim’s spouse, children and parents. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal options are.
