The pit bull lunged at Matthew Gutierrez and bit him on his stomach. He punched the dog in the nose in order to get free.

Matthew Gutierrez was then taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment for serious lacerations. An investigation into the Valley Village pit bull dog attack remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Valley Village Pit Bull Dog Attacks

Dog attacks are incredibly common and result in many serious injuries every year. According to the Centers For Disease Control, “approximately 4.7 million dog bites occur in the United States each year, and 800,000 of those bites result in medical care. The U.S. population is approximately 325.7 million people as of 2017. That means a dog bites 1 out of every 69 people.”

Dog owners are held strictly liable if their animal attacks someone. According to California Vehicle Code 3342, “The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness.” As long as the person who was bitten was not provoking the dog or trespassing the owner will usually be liable. Victims of dog attacks often suffer very serious injuries including:

  • Lacerations
  • Puncture wounds
  • Organ damage
  • Infections

Any person that is injured in a dog attack can seek justice through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. It’s important to continue to seek follow up care after an accident. Infections can often be far more serious than the initial injuries. A dog bit injury attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
