Russell Santos Riverside: Russell Santos Killed In Riverside Bus Accident By Barton Street and Krameria Avenue

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA (July 9, 2020) – A 56-year-old man identified as Russell Santos has tragically died in a bus accident near the intersection of Barton Street and Krameria Avenue.

California Highway Patrol are saying that the accident took place around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. For reasons that remain under investigation a Toyota Tundra pickup truck started to make a left-turn onto Krameria Avenue.

The truck ended up in front of the bus being driven by Russell Santos who was already in the intersection. The force of the impact caused the bus to flip on its side.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident in order to help the victim. Russell Santos was found trapped underneath the bus and later died due to his injuries.

An investigation into the fatal collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Riverside Bus Accidents

Fatal bus accidents are on the rise across the United States. According to the FMCSA, “In 2017, 4,889 large trucks and buses were involved in fatal crashes, a 9-percent increase from 2016. Although the number of large trucks and buses in fatal crashes has increased by 42 percent from its low of 3,432 in 2009, the 2017 number is still 7 percent lower than the 21st-century peak of 5,231 in 2005.” There are a number of factors that may contribute to a bus accident including:

  • Speeding
  • Drug use
  • Fatigue
  • Driver distraction

Left-turns are a regular cause of bus accidents as well as car accidents more generally. Drivers are supposed to yield the right of way to oncoming vehicles that are close enough to pose a hazard before making a left turn. According to California Vehicle Code 21801, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement.” Victims of bus accidents are protected by a number of laws.

If a bus driver was working at the time of an accident they may have legal recourse through the worker’s compensation system. According to the California Department of Industrial Relations Workers Compensation Guidebook, “If you get hurt on the job, your employer is required by law to pay for workers’ compensation benefits.” The family of any victim that died may also be able to seek justice through a wrongful death claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
