Saxon Fredrick Rodriguez of Chula Vista Died In San Diego County Jail After Being Found Unresponsive In Cell

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (July 21, 2021) – An inmate identified as Saxon Rodriguez has tragically died after being found unresponsive in his cell.

San Diego county police officials first reported the inmate’s death on Wednesday. Jail staff found Saxon Rodriguez unresponsive in his cell.

Life-saving measures were administered to the inmate. But Saxon Rodriguez was later pronounced dead at the hospital. This marks the seventh death at a San Diego County jails since the beginning of the year.

More than 150 inmates have died at San Diego County jails since 2009. Three weeks ago state lawmakers voted to investigate the high inmate-mortality rate at San Diego County jails.

Liability For San Diego County Jail Inmate Deaths

Far too many inmates die in-custody every year in California jails. Nearly 344 inmates out of 100,000 die every year. Deaths have been climbing since 2010 when they reached a low point. There are number of common causes of inmate death including suicide, cancer, inmate on inmate violence and overdoses. There are a number of steps that jails can take in order to reduce inmate deaths including:

  • Inmates should be given proper medical care
  • Inmate should be given mental health screenings
  • Inmates should be checked on periodically

A large number of inmate deaths are due to drug overdoses. In fact, eight inmates were treated for fentanyl overdose at the George F. Bailey Detention Facility in Otay Mesa. They were given Narcan in order to save their lives. A jail could be liable for an inmates death if they failed to give an inmate proper medical care. Jails must be responsive to the serious medical needs of inmates. There should be an investigation after any inmate death:

  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed
  • Medical records should be examined
  • An autopsy should be performed

The family of any victim that died in a San Diego jail may be able to seek justice through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. In order to win a civil claim plaintiffs will have to demonstrate negligence. Sadly, jails will often fight tooth and nail to deny liability for an accident. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal options are.
