Liability In East Hollywood Pedestrian Accidents
Los Angeles has one of the highest instances of pedestrian accidents in the county. According to the Center’s For Disease Control, “almost 129,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for non-fatal crash-related injuries in 2015. Pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash on each trip.” Elderly pedestrians and children remain the most at risk for serious accidents.
There a number of factors that contribute to pedestrian accidents. But by far alcohol is one of the leading contributors. Nearly half of all fatal pedestrian accidents involved drivers that were intoxicated at the time of the crash. Many accidents tend to happen between 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. as many drivers are getting off of work. Road design is also another factor that could contribute to accidents. Many intersections have obstructed lines of view or are otherwise dangerous. What follows are the five most dangerous intersections in Los Angeles:
- Devonshire St. and Reseda Blvd. – Northridge
- Imperial Highway and Vista Del Mar – Playa Del Rey
- Balboa Blvd. and Nordhoff St. – Northridge
- Firestone Blvd. and Lakewood Blvd. – Downey
- Lindley Ave. and Roscoe Blvd. – Los Angeles
Drivers are supposed to yield the right of way to pedestrians that are in lawfully marked crosswalks. According to California Vehicle Code 21950, “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter.” Victims of pedestrian accidents are protected by a number of laws.
Any person that is injured due to the negligence of another driver may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Many accident victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries until several weeks or months after an accident. A car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal options are.
