Oakland, CA (August 14, 2023) A man was apparently running across Interstate 880 when he was hit by a vehicle, according to California Highway Patrol. The collision, causing fatal injuries, occurred around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, in the southbound lanes, north of 29th Avenue.
Authorities said the man was trying to run across the freeway from the south shoulder. A car was driving down the number 2 lane at the same time an struck the pedestrian. CHP said the pedestrian was thrown into the lane closest to the center divider.

California Highway Patrol Officer Adib Zeid said that officers gave first aid to the pedestrian at the scene before he was taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. Zeid said the hospital notified him around 12:12 a.m. on Monday morning that the pedestrian had died from his injuries.
The driver who hit the pedestrian stayed at the scene and cooperated with officials, according to the California Highway Patrol.
