San Francisco, CA (June 17, 2024) A man was fatally struck by a vehicle on June 10, bringing San Francisco’s pedestrian death toll for 2024 up to ten. Even worse, the driver who hit him did not stay at the scene.

Jodie Medeiros is the executive director of “Walk San Francisco,” which is a nonprofit organization that aims to lower the rates of traffic accidents in the city. She said of Barerra-Cruz’s death, “Our hearts break for a precious life lost. The person killed at Mission and Cortland is not just a number, but a human life lost. Every life lost on San Francisco streets matters. We can’t let these tragedies go by unnoticed.”

According to officials, the number-one cause of fatal collisions in San Francisco is speeding. It is likely that speeding contributed to this hit-and-run. Unfortunately, because the driver fled the scene, it’s impossible to have a full understanding of what happened. As the investigation continues, authorities hope to find the person who tragically hit the victim.
