Salinas, CA (July 22, 2024) A terrible crash that killed a pedestrian and involved four vehicles occurred on Saturday, July 20. It happened in Salinas on southbound Highway 101 around 1:07 p.m.
A man, 77-year-old Virginio Cortez of Salinas, was changing a tire on his silver Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck on the right shoulder of the highway. A 39-year-old woman was also standing near the pickup truck for unknown reasons. A Nissan was stopped on the shoulder in front of the Chevy.
A person driving a black Acura was driving by them when suddenly, he sideswiped the woman standing on the shoulder. He continued driving and hit Cortez as well before crashing into the Chevy pickup truck, which then slammed into the Nissan. This caused the pickup truck to flip onto its side.
The Acura then spun out and crashed into a white Honda that had two children inside. Luckily, no one in that car was hurt.
Tragically, Cortez was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman who was sideswiped was taken to Natividad Medical Center after suffering abdominal contusions.
The driver of the Acura was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.
