Monterey Park, CA (August 22, 2024) Tragedy struck the community of Monterey Park on Tuesday morning, August 20th, 2024. A 94-year-old man was walking along South Atlantic Boulevard when he was struck and killed by a vehicle. The collision occurred around 11:00 a.m., as the man walked through the neighborhood, according to reports. Sung Sungchang was pronounced dead at the scene.
Late Tuesday morning, August 20th, took a fatal turn for 94-year-old Sung Sungchang. The elderly man was walking in the 100 block of South Atlantic Boulevard as a vehicle approached. For reasons that remain unknown, the vehicle struck Sungchang, throwing him to the ground. The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped and called 911, reports indicated.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found Sungchang on the ground, unresponsive, with fatal injuries. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene and officers waited for the coroner to arrive. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities following this awful accident.
Officers took a statement from the driver and gathered evidence at the scene. They are working to determine what happened on South Atlantic Boulevard in Monterey Park that late summer morning. Officers do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in this fatal accident.
