Covina, CA (October 3, 2024) A blanket of sadness covered the community of Covina as news spread of a student’s death. 17-year-old Alexander Lopez was struck and killed by a pickup truck while riding a bike on Monday, September 30th, 2024. The fatal accident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. on West Cypress Street, not far from Northview High School.
It was early in the morning as 17-year-old Northview High School student, Alexander Lopez, was riding his bicycle to school. As he rode along the 1000 block of West Cypress Street, near the high school, a white pickup truck approached him. At approximately 7:23 a.m., the pickup struck Lopez, throwing him from his bicycle. The driver of the pickup truck immediately stopped and waited for authorities.
The Covina Police Department arrived at the scene and found Lopez on the ground, his bicycle was dented and broken on the roadway. Emergency personnel hurried to his side, ready to give emergency treatment, but there was nothing they could do. 17-year-old Lopez had sustained fatal injuries in the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene. Lopez was a resident of Covina who attended school in the Azusa Unified School District, which is mourning the loss of this young life.
Investigators are working to determine what exactly happened near Northview High School and who was responsible. Lopez’s bicycle was removed from the scene and officers took statements as they work to piece together what occurred in Covina that morning.
