Bakersfield, CA (April 28, 2024) Disbelief and sadness swept through an area of Bakersfield on Friday evening. A bicyclist was tragically struck and killed by a semi-trailer at the intersection of Planz Road and Wible Road. The fatal collision occurred just before 7:00 p.m. and, initially, the truck driver had no idea. Eyewitnesses flagged down the semi-truck driver and told him what had happened. The driver immediately returned to the scene, reports indicated.
A person riding a bicycle was traveling west on Planz Road, officers said. At the same time, a semi-truck was heading north on Wible Road. At approximately 6:58 p.m., the two entered the intersection at the same time. The semi-truck hit the bicyclist, but because the driver was in a semi, they had no idea. Witnesses in the area flagged down the driver and told him what had happened. The driver immediately returned to the scene and cooperated with police officers.
The Bakersfield Police Department arrived at the scene and found the bicyclist on the ground. The bicycle laid a few feet away, completely broken, smashed and destroyed. Paramedics rushed to the bicyclist’s side and found them unresponsive. Sadly, they pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The Kern County Coroner’s Office was called to scene, according to reports.
Officers are investigating this collision, but do not believe that drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in this deadly accident. They are determined to figure out exactly what happened to cause this horrible and deadly collision in a Bakersfield intersection.
