Bayview, CA (June 18, 2024) Authorities have identified the victim of a terrible accident that occurred in Bayview on May 30. Steven Bassett was tragically struck and killed while riding his bicycle. The San Francisco resident was 70 years old.
The accident took place at the intersection of Fairfax Avenue and Newhall Street at 9:30 a.m. When Bayview police responded to the scene, Bassett was still alive. They took him to the hospital for treatment of his severe injuries, to which he later succumbed.

According to reports, Bassett was “doored,” which means someone opened their car door in the bicyclist’s path, causing a violent collision.
San Francisco Bike Coalition Executive Director Christopher White told The San Francisco Standard, “We are heartbroken and angry that another person has been killed while riding their bike, and our hearts are with their family and friends as they mourn. No one should lose their lives while biking in San Francisco.”
