Harris County, TX (December 3, 2023) Stephaun Fair, only 15 years old, was tragically killed in a collision in northwest Harris County in Texas. Three others inside the vehicle were hospitalized following this terrible collision, authorities said. The driver, also a teenager, was placed under police custody following this fatal crash.
It all started around 12:43 a.m. with a police chase through Harris County. Officers with the Houston Police Department reported seeing a vehicle driving recklessly near Rankin Road and Kuykendahl Road. Officers said they tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop. Officers began pursuing the vehicle as it reached speeds of at least 80 miles per hour through Harris County. At one point, officers said the driver turned off their headlights. When the car reached the intersection of Bammel North Houston Road and Veteran’s Memorial Drive, it hit another vehicle in the intersection and the driver lost control. The vehicle then crashed into a pickup before coming to a stop.

4 people were found inside the vehicle. Fire fighters had to extricate Stephaun Fair from the vehicle and he was, sadly, reported dead at the scene. The three other occupants were taken to a local hospital to receive treatment for injuries they sustained during the crash. One person in another vehicle was also transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of a vehicle, said to be only 16 or 17 was taken to the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center once he was discharged from the hospital. He was charged with felony murder and evading in a motor vehicle.
Stephaun Fair’s mother told authorities that she thought her son was at home, in his bed. When police officers knocked on her door in the middle of the night, she said she ran to his room, only to find he wasn’t there. The reality of this horribly tragic and senseless accident cannot go unnoticed.
Who Is Responsible In A Harris County, Texas Car Crash?
Even though safety measures for cars have been improved, motor vehicle accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in the United States. According to the CDC, “more than 32,000 people are killed and 2 million are injured each year from motor vehicle crashes.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a car accident including:
- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Inclement weather
- Dangerous turns
- Poorly designed roadways
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid causing accidents. This is especially true for commercial drivers that work for a city.
If a negligent driver worked for a city, that city could potentially be liable in the event of an accident. Generally speaking, employers are vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. There are a number of steps that should be taken after a car accident.
- Photos of the accident site should be taken.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- Medical records should be preserved.
- Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
- A thorough independent investigation should be conducted.
The family of any victim who has died in a car accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and funeral expenses. It is essential that evidence is properly preserved after a car accident. A car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
