Fontana, CA (May 2, 2024) The community of Fontana is mourning the loss of a child this week, following a fatal collision on Tuesday, April 30th. Residents are in disbelief as they come to grips with this terrible tragedy. The child was killed in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Almeria Avenue and Baseline Avenue, just after 4:00 p.m., according to reports.
It was a typical afternoon in Fontana as vehicles drove along the streets, pedestrians walked on sidewalks, and bicyclists peddled to their destinations. Things quickly changed at one intersection, according to Public Information Officer Daniel Romero. A white Honda Accord was driving east on Baseline Avenue as a red Nissan Altima was turning left onto Almeria Avenue. Just after 4:00 p.m., the Honda slammed into the side of the Nissan in the middle of the intersection.
The 911 call came in and sirens grew louder as emergency crews hurried to the scene. They immediately checked the vehicles to see if anyone was injured. They found a 3-year-old child in one of the vehicles who had sustained fatal injuries. Nothing could be done. With heavy hearts, they pronounced the child dead at the scene and respectfully, covered their small body with a tarp and called for a coroner.

Others were also found injured in this accident, but the exact number of people injured is still unknown. All injuried occupants from both vehicles were transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and Loma Linda University Medical Center to receive treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Officers do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in this devastating collision in Fontana.
Police officers closed Baseline Avenue for hours as investigators worked the scene. They gathered evidence and took statements from people and are determined to learn what caused this accident that claimed the life of a 3-year-old child. They also plan to figure out who was at fault in this fatal accident. Once they finished, crews came in and began cleaning the debris and glass from the scene. Tow trucks were called to remove the vehicles from the intersection and slowly, the intersection was ready for traffic to resume.
