San Diego, CA (April 28, 2024) A 22-year-old driver fell asleep behind the wheel just before 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 27th. They crashed into another vehicle, leaving one person with serious injuries, according to reports. It happened on Howard Avenue in the neighborhood of San Ysidro in San Diego.
A 22-year-old was driving a vehicle at approximately 3:50 a.m. on Saturday, when they fell asleep behind the wheel. The vehicle began to veer across the double yellow lines and into oncoming traffic. At the same time, a 49-year-old man was driving a Toyota 4Runner, approaching the 22-year-old motorist. The two vehicles collided and the 4Runner’s seats folded backwards, reports indicated.
The San Diego Police Department arrived at the scene and found the two damaged vehicles in the San Ysidro neighborhood. Paramedics checked both vehicles to see if anyone needed medical attention and found a passenger in the 4Runner with serious injuries. The passenger told paramedics that they couldn’t feel anything below their waist. The victim was carefully removed from the vehicle and transported, via ambulance, to a local hospital for treatment. The medical staff at the hospital reported that the victim had sustained a fractured thoracic vertebrae during the collision.
Crews had to clean debris from the roadway and officers with the San Diego Police Department gathered evidence and spoke to those involved. Officers determined that the 22-year-old driver fell asleep while driving and did not suspect that drugs or alcohol were factors in this collision. If anyone has any information regarding this accident, they are encouraged to contact the San Diego Police Department or contact Crime Stoppers.
