OAKLAND, CA (May 23, 2022) – A driver who was headed in the wrong direction on Highway 24 in Oakland has been arrested after attempting to run away. The driver was heading against traffic on the 24 when he collided with another vehicle, killing one woman and injuring five others according to the SF Chronicle.

The unnamed driver was in a Mercedes heading westbound on the eastbound side of the 24 and crashed head-on into a Mazda at around 2:00 a.m. The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around Shattuck Avenue.

A female passenger in the Mazda, whose name and age are unknown, was killed in the accident while four other passengers in the same vehicle sustained major injuries.

The Chronicle reports:

The suspect, who was also injured, ran away from the scene and into a nearby “vegetated area” off the highway, Arias said. CHP officers responded to the scene, followed the suspect and found him with the assistance of a dog from CHP’s Golden Gate Division, Arias said.

The suspect was found and taken to the hospital along with the other four who survived the accident. The suspect was then taken into custody, but further details are unavailable.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this accident.
