The accident occurred right around 6:26 a.m., according to reports, not far from Sheldon Road. There have been reports of injuries following this collision as well.
As motorists heading along southbound Highway 99 in Elk Grove on Wednesday morning, at least 5 vehicles suddenly collided, according to reports. The cause of the accident remains a mystery, but it left at least one person with injuries and caused huge traffic issues for commuters.
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found those who were injured. However, it is unknown if they were taken to a hospital or treated at the scene. Investigators took statements and worked the scene to determine what caused this multi-vehicle collision on Highway 99 and who was responsible. Officers continue to work to determine if drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in this accident, reports indicated.
Tow trucks had to be called to the scene to remove several of the damaged vehicles from the highway, causing further traffic delays. Crews worked as quickly as they could to remove the large amount of glass and debris from the highway that had been left behind. According to reports, it was hours before traffic began to flow smoothly again.
