UPDATE: Jack Varganagl arrested after two killed in fiery Irvine DUI crash

Update July 28, 2022: The Orange County Coroner’s office has confirmed to Accident News Now that the victims in this tragic accident are Kamiar Ashraf and Roxanne Ashraf. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to their families during this difficult time.

IRVINE, CA (July 18, 2022) – Jack Varganagl, 20, of Irvine, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs after crashing into another vehicle, killing both of its occupants.

Police and firefighters were called about 8 p.m. Sunday to Meadow Valley and Spring Valley regarding a crash between a Mini Cooper and Volkswagen
Golf, police said.

Kamiar Ashraf and Roxanne Ashraf, of Irvine, were found dead in the Mini Cooper, which burst into flames following the collision, and Jack Varganagl, who was behind the wheel of the Golf, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, police said. Varganagl was injured in the crash and taken to an area hospital to be treated, police said.

The names of the victims were not immediately released as authorities were working to confirm their identities. [Editor’s note: The victim’s names were released to Accident News Now by the coroner’s office on July 28.]

The cause of the crash was under investigation, but police said speed and drugs appear to have factored into it.

Anyone who witnessed the crash was asked to call Detective Roberto Solis at [email protected] or call 949-724-7024.

Update July 19, 2022: A YouTuber posted what purportedly is footage of the accident scene, showing the officers performing aid on a body lying on the ground and a flaming car in the background in a suburban neighborhood. We must warn you that the footage is graphic. The video can be viewed here.

Update July 20, 2022: The graphic video was taken down from YouTube, and instead we have video footage here of different angles of the scene of this tragic accident.

We have also learned that in addition to the driver and passenger of the Mini Cooper being killed, a dog inside the vehicle was also killed. Once again, we urge anyone with additional information or details regarding this case to reach out to the Irvine Police Department.
