San Diego, CA (May 1, 2024) Two young servicemen were tragically killed in San Diego when their vehicle left the roadway and slammed into a tractor-trailer. Sadly, both 21-year-old Jacob Johnson and his passenger, 19-year-old Eduardo Hernandez Zambrano were killed in this collision. It all transpired on Interstate 5, not far from Cockleburr Road at approximately 9:00 p.m.
It was just before 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25th, as a 2016 Hyundai sedan headed south on Interstate 5. The sun had already set and darkness had taken over as headlights illuminated the road. 21-year-old Jacob Johnson was driving when, for reasons still unknown, he lost control of the Hyundai. Before Johnson knew what was happening, the vehicle began to swerve off the freeway. Then, with no time to react, the Hyundai slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer that was parked on the side of the road, according to reports.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and found the Hyundai with major body damage. Officers rushed to give aid to anyone in need, but were met with tragedy. They found Johnson, as well as his 19-year-old passenger, Zambrano, both deceased. With heavy hearts, they pronounced them both dead at the scene and contacted the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
As of now, it has not been disclosed which branch of the military the two victims served with. Officers investigated the scene and are still working to determine what caused this traumatic and horrible collision on the 5 Freeway. A tow truck had to be called to the scene to remove the wreckage that was once the Hyundai. Debris and glass had to be removed from the scene, as well. This horrible accident serves as a reminder that anything can happen in an instant when driving a motor vehicle.
