San Diego, CA (August 27, 2024) Tragedy struck the community of San Diego as news spread of a fiery collision that claimed an officer’s life. The same crash left another officer in critical condition and also claimed the life of one other person. The devastating accident occurred on Monday night, right around 11:30 p.m, on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.
It started when officers noticed a vehicle speeding down Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver led the patrol car on a high speed chase through San Diego. Reports indicated that the police supervisor told the officers to stop the pursuit, which they did. However, a few minutes later, the suspect vehicle rammed the side of the patrol car, officers reported. The collision involved several other civilian vehicles, as well.
The dark, night sky filled with flashing emergency lights and sirens broke through the silence as first responders hurried to the scene. They found several damaged vehicles, including the police cruiser. Sadly, they found the police officer who was driving the patrol car unresponsive. With heavy hearts, they pronounced him dead at the scene. The officer sitting in the passenger seat had sustained critical injuries, officers reported. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where they are “fighting for their life,” according to reports.
Update (August 29): The deceased officer has been identified as 30-year-old Austin Machitar. The injured officer has been identified as 27-year-old Zach Martinez.
The driver of the suspect vehicle was also killed in this horrible collision. Officers pronounced them dead at the scene as well. Reports indicated that no other civilians were injured in this collision.
