Tracy, CA (March 31, 2024) A combination of sadness and shock swept through the town of Tracy on Sunday after a wrong-way crash claimed the lives of two people and left three others injured. It all happened on westbound Interstate 580 at approximately 2:00 a.m., according to police officers. Two of the injured were a 4-year-old child and a 2-month-old baby.
As vehicles traveled along Interstate 580 in Tracy, a Honda Accord was driving east in the westbound lanes. The driver of the Honda was an 18-year-old from Antioch. As it headed the wrong way, a Kia SUV was approaching it. A family from Fort Bragg occupied the Kia. A 32-year-old woman was driving the Kia which had four passengers, a 35-year-old man, a 4-year-old child and a 2-month old baby.
Near Corral Hollow Road, the two vehicles collided, head-on. The force of the collision caused both vehicles to overturn, according to officers. The 18-year-old driver of the Honda was thrown from the vehicle during the collision. He slammed into the center median of the highway and laid there, lifeless. The California Highway Patrol said that he did not survive the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 32-year-old woman who was driving the Kia sustained life-threatening injuries in the collision. Paramedics rushed her to San Joaquin General Hospital in critical condition. The medical team did everything they could but her injuries were too severe. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The 35-year-old man in the Kia as well as the 2-month-old baby, sustained serious injuries in the collision and were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The 4-year-old boy suffered minor injuries in the wrong-way collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. All three are expected to make a full recovery.
