San Bernardino, CA (May 10,2024) Tragedy struck the community of San Bernardino on Wednesday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision that claimed one person’s life. The accident, which occurred on Interstate 215, also left another person with injuries, according to reports. The deadly accident happened just before 1:30 p.m. on May 8th.
Motorists were heading to and from destinations on Wednesday afternoon as they drove along Interstate 215 in San Bernardino. One of the vehicles was a Nissan Versa that, for reasons unknown, suddenly stopped in the middle of the freeway. A Freightliner box truck was driving in the lane behind the Nissan when the vehicle suddenly stopped. The driver of the box truck had no time to stop and couldn’t change lanes because of traffic. It ended up slamming into the back of the Nissan Versa, reports indicated. The impact from the box truck, forced the Nissan into the quardrail on the side of the road as the box truck tipped over in the middle of the freeway. Cars began slamming on their breaks, horns were honking and tires were squealing as people slammed on their breaks or tried to avoid the collision altogether.
The two right lanes of the freeway, as well as the slow lane, were completely blocked by this point, according to the California Highway Patrol. Upon arrival, officers with the CHP began directing traffic away from the collision. Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the driver of the Nissan unresponsive. Although they were ready to perform life-saving measures, there was nothing they could do. The driver had been killed in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another female was also said to be injured in this collision, although it has not been revealed which vehicle she was occupying. Paramedics found here with serious injuries and rushed her to a local hospital, via ambulance, to receive treatment.
Officers investigated the scene and spoke to witnesses. They want to understand why the driver of the Nissan suddenly stopped in the middle of the roadway on Interstate 215. The Nissan had to be towed from the scene and the box truck, which was laying on its side, had to be put back on its wheels. Crews cleaned debris and glass from the interstate and after a few hours, all of the lanes were reopened.
