Santa Maria, CA (September 9, 2024) An early morning crash on Highway 101 in Santa Maria, claimed one person’s life and left 2 others seriously injured. It happened in the southbound lanes of the highway, not far from Betteravia Road, right around 5:25 a.m.
This devastating story begins with a 911 call around 5:13 a.m. reporting a wrong-way driver in the southbound lanes of Highway 101. Officers reported that approximately 10 minutes later, the Mazda CX-9 that was traveling the wrong way, hit a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
Emergency crews arrived and found the driver of the pickup, 63-year-old Cecilio L. Camacho, trapped inside the vehicle with critical injuries. His passenger, a 53-year-old woman from Santa Maria named Alma Teresa Alcorta Del Lazaro, was dead in the passenger seat. Officers pronounced her dead at he scene and firefighters worked to free the man from the vehicle. He was rushed to a local hospital to receive treatment for life-threatening injuries.
The wrong-way driver, identified as 34-year-old Kendra Cordova, had also sustained serious injuries in the collision. Officers determined that she had been driving while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. She was arrested at the scene, officers reported, and faces a number of charges.
