Josh Gilliland was walking to work at Cheers one day, just as he had done every day for more than 20 years. The San Diego Police Department said that Gilliland was walking within a crosswalk when he was hit by a drunk driver who ran a red light. The driver then fled the scene, leaving Gilliland laying in the intersection of El Cajon Boulevard and Park Boulevard.
Gilliland was taken to a hospital for treatment, but died from his injuries a few days later. He was only 47 years old. His longtime companion, Scott Moore, told Fox 5 that Gilliland was just living his life and somebody hit and killed him.
Police officers arrested 37-year-old Brandon Janik of San Diego, who was driving a 2022 BMW during the hit-and-run. He was arrested about a mile from where the crash happened. He was booked into jail without bail. Janik faces a number of charges, including murder, gross vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, felony DUI as well as charges related to false insurance claims.
