Santa Cruz, CA (August 18, 2023) David Barnes, 79, of Aptos, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of DUI after causing a collision in Santa Cruz, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash happened a little before 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.
Barnes was driving a 1996 Acura Integra, according to Police. He was traveling north on Highway 1 near North Branciforte Avenue. A 2015 Toyota Corolla was also heading north, when Barnes collided with the Toyota.

The cars hit the metal guardrail before they both flipped over. Barnes wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was thrown from his car. Each car only had a driver, no other occupants. Both drivers were injured and taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Investigators believe Barnes was driving under the influence and arrested him for felony driving.
