Apple Valley, CA (November 5, 2024) A DUI driver claimed a life on Monday, November 4th, and then fled the scene. 23-year-old John R. Akers was riding a motorcycle when he was struck and killed on Monday afternoon, just before 4:00 p.m. This tragic and senseless accident occurred at the intersection of Bear Valley Road and Iroquois Road.
Akers was riding a black Harley Davidson along Bear Valley Road, heading west in the No. 1 lane. At the same time, a black Hyundai Genesis was heading east in the left turn lane. The vehicle, driven by 30-year-old David Richard Rolph, made an unsafe turn, according to officers. He turned directly into the path of Akers. There was no time for Akers to react and he slammed into the side of the vehicle, according to reports. Rolph fled the scene, leaving Akers behind with life-threatening injuries.
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found Akers on the ground. They began administering life-saving treatment, but it was too late. 23-year-old John Akers was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers determined that he had been struck by a vehicle and later found Rolph. He was arrested and is facing several charges, including DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter.
