Broomfield, CO (December 16, 2023) 32-year-old Jose Menjivar was arrested following a crash that left two people dead, according to authorities. The accident occurred near the Broomfield High School on Tuesday, December 12th.
The Broomfield Police Department responded to a 911 call about a collision that happened at the intersection of Miramonte Boulevard and Main Street, behind the Broomfield High School. The crash occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m., according to authorities.
Witnesses told police officers that Menjivar was driving a pickup truck between 80 and 100 miles per hour through a 40 mph speed zone. He was said to be passing vehicles when he crashed into an SUV. The force of the crash caused the SUV to slam into a tree on the side of the road.

Two people were inside the SUV, 47-year-old Melissa Powell and 16-year-old Riordan Powell. Melissa was killed in the collision and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Riordan was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Sadly, the teenager later died at the hospital.
Menjivar was also taken to a local hospital for treatment for injuries he sustained in the collision. During their investigation, officers noticed that Mendivar’s vehicle had “an overwhelming odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage.” There were also at least 2 empty beer cans and an open beer case inside the pickup truck. Mendivar’s blood alcohol content was .249, more than three times the legal limit, officers reported.
Menivar was arrested and faces multiple charges, including, 2 counts of vehicular homicide, 2 counts of reckless vehicular homicide, driving while under the influence of drugs/alcohol and aggravated habitual offender drove when revoked.
