Twitch streamer Adriana Chechik breaks back, 2 others sustain serious injuries at TwitchCon

SAN DIEGO, CA (October 10, 2022) – Twitch streamer Adriana Chechik broke her back in two places at TwitchCon on Sunday after participating in a jousting duel set up by Lenovo. Two other streamers were seriously injured at the same event.

Chechik reported on her Twitter account that she broke her back in two places and underwent surgery to have a rod placed in her back for support.

Streamer LochVaness also reported a dislocated knee and a sprained ankle after taking part in the jousting event.

One other streamer reported breaking her ankle in numerous places.

The jousting event involved participants standing on two platforms surrounded by foam blocks, with the goal being to knock the other person off the platform and into the foam pit. However, many Twitter users and event attendees reported that the foam blocks only superficially covered the concrete ground.

Foam pits are usually several feet deep, supported by a trampoline or forgiving floor as shown by this tweet.

Liability in Adriana Chechik’s Back Injury

The jousting pit where Adriana Chechik was injured was set up by Lenovo for a Lenovo Legion event. When Chechik jumped off the platform into the foam pit, she had the expectation that the foam pit would cushion her fall. However, it became unfortunately and immediately clear that the foam pit offered no protection at all from impacting the hard flooring. Video of the Twitch incident shows that Chechik lands on the ground very hard and is struggling to move and make sense of what happened.

Chechik, along with the other Twitch streamers who participated in this event, had reasonable expectations of safety: a foam pit should support and cushion falling participants from injury. Since Twitch and Lenovo set up the dangerous conditions of the event, both could be held liable for all the injuries that took place there at TwitchCon.
