Escondido, CA (December 19, 2023) 62-year-old Craig Arthur Jameson from La Mesa was killed in a motorcycle accident on Saturday, December 16th, authorities said. The accident happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Highland Valley Road, just east of Bandy Canyon Road.
Jameson was riding a 2017 Yamaha FZ09 motorycycle eastbound on Highland Valley Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Jared Grishaber said. At the same time, a 20-year-old San Marcos man was driving a 2019 Toyota Camry. He was backing out of a residential driveway onto Highland Valley Road right as Jameson was riding by on his motorcycle.
In an attempt to avoid being hit, Jameson steered right, but his attempt was unsuccessful. He crashed into the right front bumper of the Toyota, police said. Jameson was then thrown from his motorcycle and he landed past the northern edge of Highland Valley Road, along with his motorcycle.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and paramedics rushed Jameson to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. Sadly, he later died at the hospital from his injuries. The driver of the Toyota was not injured in the accident.
The County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that Jameson was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, but died from multiple blunt force injuries. Officers do not believe alcohol was a factor in this fatal accident. The collision is still under investigation as authorities try to determine exactly what happened on Highland Valley Road.
Liability In Escondido Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcyclists have a naturally small profile and are more likely to be overlooked by other drivers. Many collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous lane changes. According to California Vehicle Code 22107, “No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a motorcycle accident including:
- Speeding
- Drunk driving
- Driver distraction
- Inclement weather
The family of any victim that died in a motorcycle accident may be able to seek aid through a wrongful death claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. There are, however, statute of limitations associated with civil claims. Failing to act within the statute of limitations may result in a permanent forfeiture of your rights.
