Fresno, CA (September 7, 2023) 11 teenagers were injured on Wednesday afternoon when a truck crashed into a bus stop near a high school. The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. as students waited for the bus after school, according to authorities.

The bus stop was outside of Roosevelt High School near Tulare Avenue and Cedar Avenue. The Mayor of Fresno, Jerry Dyer, told reporters that a 16-year-old was driving a pickup and speeding when he lost control and crashed into the FAX bust stop. The teens were all taken to local hospitals where they received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Mayor Dyer said that some suffered broken bones and other injuries but “It could have been much more severe.”

Following the collision, the driver pulled over, got out of the truck, along with his 14-year-old sister, and ran away. Police officers said family members picked up the two teens and left the area. The car was pulled over near Orange and Ventura and the 16-year-old was taken into custody.

The crash is now being investigated as a hit-and-run.

Liability In Fresno Pedestrian Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in pedestrian accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “An estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.” There are a number of factors that could lead to a pedestrian collision including:

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Driver distraction
  • Inclement weather

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. The family of any victim that died in a pedestrian collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
