72-Year-Old Man Struck, Killed At Riverside Intersection

Sergio Mendoza struck and killed in Vista intersection.

Riverside, CA (October 24, 2024) The community of Riverside was saddened as news spread of a 72-year-old pedestrian’s death. The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Biscayne Avenue and Altadena Drive, right around 5:00 p.m. It happened on October 21st, according to reports, and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officers reported that a silver Chevy Equinox, driven by a 38-year-old woman, was heading west on Altadena Drive on Monday evening. She approached the intersection to find a man standing in the middle of the roadway. Officers reported that there are no stop sign on Altadena Drive, but stop signs are posted for Biscayne Avenue at the intersection. The driver of the Chevy couldn’t stop in time and struck the man.

Emergency personnel arrived and paramedics rushed the victim to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, the man succumbed to those injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities have pointed out that the speed limit in this residential area is only 25. They are still not sure why the woman couldn’t see the man in time to stop. The investigation is being led by the Ricerside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team. They have stated that they are working to determine if speed or distracted driving were the cause of this deadly accident.
