LOS ANGELES, CA (August 9, 2022) – Alberto Leal, 44, and Lashonda Davis, 43, were identified as the victims killed on Tuesday by a driver fleeing from police, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
A spokesman for the department said that both Leal and Davis were listed as homeless, the L.A. Times reports.
Police were initially called to investigate a domestic dispute on the 4800 block of Figueroa Street around 11:30 a.m. After finding no evidence of a domestic dispute, they were called to the area again at around 12:40 p.m.
Officers searched the area for the male suspect who’d fled the residence, but did not chase him.
The suspect was later found by police when they discovered his vehicle at West 52nd Place and South Flower Street, where he crashed into Alberto Leal and Lashonda Davis.
Video footage of the crash showed the damage vehicle next to an encampment with a white sheet covering two bodies.
The suspect’s identity remains unknown and is hospitalized at the time of this writing. We will continue to update this story as it develops.
Liability In Los Angeles Pedestrian Accidents
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in pedestrian accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “An estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.” There are a number of factors that could lead to a pedestrian collision including:
- Speeding
- Drunk driving
- Driver distraction
- Inclement weather
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. The family of any victim that died in a pedestrian collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
