Caltrans’ Alexander Rodish Killed By Tow Truck On the 5

San Clemente, CA (July 22, 2024) A Caltrans worker was tragically killed while picking up trash on the 5 Freeway in San Clemente this morning.

The crash took place around 9:35 a.m. on the northbound side of the road north of Avenue Palizado. Two Caltrans workers had pulled over on the right shoulder to pick up debris. Suddenly, one of the workers was struck by a freeway service patrol tow truck. It’s unclear why the tow truck driver veered into the right shoulder.

The impact sent the worker into the air and over a curb, where a Nissan Rogue driving up the onramp struck him.

The Nissan driver, the tow truck driver, and the second Caltrans worker sustained minor injuries. But tragically, the worker who was struck was killed. He has been identified as Alexander Rodish, a 55-year-old who was an equipment operator at the San Juan Capistrano maintenance yard. Governor Gavin Newsom ordered that the flags on the state Capitol and all Caltrans buildings be lowered to half-staff in Rodish’s honor.

An investigation into this accident is ongoing.
