Donald Jay Gillam Killed In Bakersfield Hit-And-Run, Garrett Shawn Smith Arrested

Pedestrian Struck and killed by hit-and-run driver in Bakersfield.

Bakersfield, C (November 5, 2024) 72-year-old Donald Jay Gillam was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Bakersfield. The accident occurred on Sierra Highway, not far from Cerro Gordo Street, according to reports. The vehicle fled the scene, leaving Gillam behind.

Gillam was walking along northbound Sierra Highway on August 22nd, when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene, but Gillam had succumbed to his injuries. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene and a coroner was called.

Officers worked diligently on the case, searching for the vehicle that struck Gillam. On October 11th, they located the vehicle, using surveillance footage from a local business. Officers reported that the 1998 Toyota Avalon was found abandoned in the desert, not far from Mojave. The vehicle had a busted windshield and a damaged bumper and hood, officers said. The driver had even removed the license plates. They found the driver responsible. 23-year-old Garrett Shawn Smith was arrested and is facing hit-and-run charges, as well as destruction of evidence charges.
