San Diego, CA (October 28, 2023) A homeless man was struck and killed by a car while walking on Interstate 8 in San Diego on Friday evening, October 27th. The San Diego Police Department said the accident occurred in the Midway District around 8:17 p.m.
A 2008 black Mercedes Sprinter Van, driven by a 74-year-old man, was driving on the Interstate 8 Freeway in San Diego when it turned onto the 3600 block of Camino Del Rio West. As it made the turn, a pedestrian was walking in the eastbound lane, according to Officer Robert Heims. The driver of the van was unable to see the pedestrian until it was too late. The van hit the pedestrian, who died at the scene from life-threatening injuries.

The San Diego Police Department arrived at the scene to find the van stopped, awaiting their arrival. The driver of the van and the two passengers were not injured, but they stayed and cooperated with police officers. Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in this collision, according to Heims.
The San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit responded to the scene to investigate the accident.
