Bell Gardens, CA (April 8, 2024) The community of Bell Gardens was saddened as news spread of a pedestrian killed by a hit-and-run driver. 62-year old Janet Young, a mother and a grandmother, was grabbing dinner for her family when she was struck and killed by a vehicle that fled the scene. This senseless tragedy occurred at the intersection of Chalet Drive and Gage Avenue on Thursday, April 4th, just minutes before 8:00 p.m.
Janet Young had grabbed dinner at a local restaurant in Bell Gardens on Thursday evening. As she crossed the street in the 6800 block of Gage Avenue, she did so within the crosswalk, checking to make sure it was clear before entering the intersection. Suddenly, a dark-colored sedan. heading east, went through the intersection and struck Young. The driver then fled the scene, leaving Young lying in the intersection with life-threatening injuries.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived at the scene with the Bell Gardens Police Department. They found Young lying on the ground, the food she had gotten was also on the ground. She was unresponsive, but the EMTs did everything they could to try and save her. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family, friends and even strangers within the community gathered on Sunday night, April 7th, for a vigil. Young was the mother of six children and also had six grandchildren. Her children have created a GoFundMe page to help the family cover the costs of a memorial service.
The Bell Garden Police Department’s Collision Response Team is leading the investigation and is determined to find the vehicle involved. In doing so, they hope to find the driver who fled the scene, leaving Young behind. Anyone who has any information regarding this fatal hit-and-run is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers.
