Lodi, CA (July 13, 2024) The community of Lodi was shocked and saddened by news of a wheelchair bound man being struck and killed by a DUI driver. The fatal collision took place around 9:40 p.m. at Elm Street and Cherokee Lane in Lodi, according to police reports. Officers said the victim was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.
A man in a wheelchair was moving along the street near the intersection of Elm and Cherokee Lane on Friday night. At the same time, a vehicle was approaching the pedestrian and the intersection, reports indicated. The vehicle struck the man in the wheelchair, throwing the victim from the chair. The driver immediately stopped and waited for police officers to arrive at the scene, according to reports.
Officers with the Lodi Police Department arrived at the scene and found the victim on the ground, several feet from his damaged wheelchair. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 49-year-old Lucas Suarez Ramos, appeared to be under the influence, reports indicated. As officers questioned him, paramedics quickly loaded the victim, who had sustained life-threatening injuries, into an ambulance. He was rushed to a local hospital to receive life-saving medical treatment, but his injuries were too severe. Sadly, he passed away and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officers at the scene placed Suarez Ramos under arrest. He was booked into a local jail and faces several felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, officers reported.
