Santa Barbara, CA (July 1, 2024) The community of Santa Barbara was saddened following a hit-and-run that left a pedestrian dead. It all transpired on the Mesa in Santa Barbara on Saturday night, June 29th. The tragic accident took place at 11:30 p.m. and the driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
It was dark in Santa Barbara on Saturday night as a pedestrian walked along Cliff Drive. As they approached the 800 block of Cliff Drive, not far from Loma Alta Drive, a vehicle approached. Without warning, the vehicle struck the pedestrian and then quickly fled the scene, according to Santa Barbara Police Department, Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale.
The Santa Barbara Police Department arrived at the scene and found the victim, identified only as a male, lying in the roadway. Paramedics were prepared to do everything they could to save the pedestrian’s life, but he had already succumbed to his injuries. Officials at the scene said it was obvious he had been struck by a vehicle, but there was no vehicle in sight, leading officers to believe this was a hit-and-run. Sadly, they pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene and waited for the coroner to arrive.
Update: The victim of this tragedy has been identified as Juan Lopez, a 39-year-old. The suspected driver has been arrested.
