Richmond, CA (May 25, 2024) A tragedy occurred in the middle of the night in Richmond on Thursday, May 23rd, when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle. It all happened on Interstate 580 in Richmond at approximately 1:25 a.m. in the westbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. The victim was struck near the off-ramp to Harbour Way.
The interstate was dark that early in the morning. Headlights and the occasional street light illuminated the freeway as motorists drove. A pedestrian was walking along the freeway in the darkness, when they were suddenly struck by a vehicle not far from the Harbour Way off-ramp. The impact knocked the pedestrian several feet before they landed on the roadway. The driver immediately stopped and waited for police officers to arrive at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol was the first to arrive at the scene. They found the victim lying on the roadway, unresponsive. Nothing could be done, as they had been killed in the collision. With heavy hearts, officers pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene and called for a coroner. They took a statement from the driver of the vehicle and gathered evidence at the scene. They continue to work to determine what caused this fatal pedestrian accident on Interstate 580 and who was at fault. Officers had to close the highway for two hours as they investigated the accident.
