Oceanside, CA (June 25, 2024) Oceanside residents awoke to shocking and sad news on Tuesday morning, June 25th. A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle that morning on State Route 78, officers reported. The accident took place near Jefferson Street in the early morning hours.
A sedan was heading east along State Route 78 early on Tuesday morning, before the sun had begun to rise. As it neared Jefferson Street, it struck a pedestrian. The force threw the pedestrian several feet before they landed on the ground. The driver of the sedan immediately pulled into a nearby store parking lot and called 911.
The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene and found the driver who reported the incident. They showed officers where the accident had taken place and that’s when officers found the pedestrian. They were lying on the ground, unresponsive. Quickly, officers began performing life-saving techniques on the victim in an attempt to save his life. Sadly, it was too late. The pedestrian had been killed in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers gently covered the victim’s body with a tarp and contacted the coroner.
Update: The driver has been identified as Isaac Audelo, a 31-year-old.
The driver gave his statement to police officers and cooperated during their investigation. Officers are working to identify the cause of this fatal accident on State Route 78 in Oceanside. At this time, it is unknown if the driver of the sedan faces any charges. The investigation is ongoing, according to reports. Officers want to remind drivers to always stay alert when operating a vehicle.
