Oroville, CA (October 26, 2023) Shawn Pelfrey of Plumas Lake struck and killed a pedestrian on State Route 70 in Oroville, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Department. The Oroville California Highway Patrol said the accident occurred around 10:00 p.m. in south Butte Country on Wednesday, October 25th.

Shawn Pelfrey was driving a Ford F150 pickup truck north on State Route 70 at about 55 miles per hour, according to authorities. A pedestrian crossed the road directly in front of Pelfrey. Officers said that the pedestrian was wearing dark clothes and it was dark outside and Pelfrey didn’t see him until it was too late.
Paramedics arrived to help the pedestrian, but instead, pronounced them dead at the scene. Pelfrey remained at the scene and cooperated with police officers following the accident. Authorities aren’t sure as to why the pedestrian walked out in front of the vehicle, but the accident is still under investigation.
